Durante le visite del 1849-50 e del 1851-52 Ruskin trascorse due inverni raccogliendo materiale per le pietre di Venezia, un'opera che si rivelò molto influente nello sviluppo dell'architettura vittoriana. Questo taccuino architettonico, noto come ‘Door Book’, è una delle serie di dieci che Ruskin ha usato per registrare dettagli e misurazioni di aspetti delle caratteristiche architettoniche, accuratamente incrociarli con fogli di lavoro e disegni. I taccuini più piccoli sono nominati da Ruskin secondo il contenuto, ‘Door Book’, ‘House Book 1’, ‘House Book 2’, ‘Palace Book’, ‘Gothic Book’ e ‘Bit Book’.
