Ruskin era perennemente interessato all'aspetto e all'azione delle nuvole, registrando in disegni effetti insoliti sia a casa che all'estero. Parte VII di Pittori Moderni, volume V (1860) è intitolata ‘Of Cloud Beauty,’ e nel 1885 ristampa queste osservazioni (come Cœli Enarrant) con l’intenzione, mai compiuta, di una continuazione. Questo è uno dei diversi studi delle nuvole spesso drammatiche sopra il Vecchio a Coniston, direttamente di fronte a Brantwood attraverso il lago. Gli effetti di dissolvenza attraverso l'esposizione alla luce sono più evidenti nei piccoli tocchi di giallo, verde e rosa (probabilmente rosa madder, un pigmento molto fuggitivo) nel centro.
