Nel 1800 Robert Shurlock (1772-1847) sposò la figlia di John Russell, Henrietta Ann Jane Russell (1775-1849), vicino alla casa dell'artista a Guildford, Surrey. Questo pastello è stato probabilmente completato poco dopo il matrimonio, e il ritratto compagno di Henrietta con il primo figlio della coppia è anche in questa galleria. Qui il signor Shurlock è un uomo dashing all'altezza della sua giovinezza, indossando una sciarpa collo di seta e un cappotto doppiopetto con bottoni in ottone. L'artista eseguì diversi altri ritratti per la famiglia di sua figlia, tutti risalenti al 1801.
