Nel 1860 Courbet iniziò a dipingere scene di nudi erotici, tra cui raffigurazioni di genitali femminili, donne nude in pose erotiche, e questo dipinto, raffigurante lesbiche. Courbet ha guadagnato molta notorietà per i suoi nudi erotici, che ha mostrato accanto a scene di caccia, assicurando una vendita e una reputazione. Le Sommeil è stato commissionato dal diplomatico turco Khalil Bey, che ha anche commissionato The Origin of the World, per includere la sua collezione privata di dipinti erotici. Questo particolare dipinto è stato anche parte di un rapporto di polizia nel 1872 quando un commerciante di pittura ha tenuto in esso una mostra. Non è stato permesso essere visualizzato pubblicamente fino al 1988.
