Paul Gauguin e Vincent van Gogh avevano un'amicizia precoce, che fioriva in un invito ad Arles, in Francia, dove van Gogh voleva che Gauguin rimanesse con lui e creasse una colonia d'arte. Questo dipinto è stato completato durante il soggiorno di Gauguin in Arles, raffigurante van Gogh pittura il suo famoso lavoro girasoli. Purtroppo, Gaugin e Van Gogh non erano in grado di creare la loro colonia d'arte, come Gauguin rimase solo per due mesi. La coppia litigava, e nel dicembre del 1888, Gauguin affrontava van Gogh con una lama rasoio. Van Gogh, in preda al panico, è fuggito a un bordello, dove ha tagliato il suo lobo a sinistra inferiore. Gauguin poi se ne andò e i due non si videro più.
