Sargent arrivò a Parigi nel 1874 e si iscrisse nello studio di insegnamento del ritrattista Carolus-Duran, amico di Edouard Manet e degli Impressionisti. Sotto l'influenza di Carolus, Sargent partecipò all'entusiasmo parigino prevalente per la Spagna e le cose spagnole. Probabilmente ha fatto questo studio di ritratto illuminato con delicatezza della donna spagnola Roma durante i suoi anni di studente a Parigi. Il dipinto è stato dato al Metropolitan da George A. Hearn, un trustee e il Museo" più importante donatore di dipinti americani all'inizio del XX secolo.
