Questa scena potrebbe rappresentare un caravansary in Egitto, Grecia o Turchia (che Sargent visitò nel 1890–91) o un mercato in Spagna o Tangeri (che Sargent visitò nel 1895). La tavolozza terrena, accentata da blu e viola, e la tecnica fluida caratterizzano lo stile acquerello dell'artista negli anni 1890. Larghi lavaggi suggeriscono gli spazi interni ombreggiati sotto i portici, e forme indeterminate appaiono nel cortile in mezzo a grappoli di urne e contenitori. Il sottodisegno di grafite rapido di Sargent è chiaramente visibile, soprattutto nell'architettura.
