Il prolifico Sargent fece dozzine di schizzi e acquerelli durante il suo tempo al Fronte francese come artista di guerra ufficiale. I suoi soggetti spaziavano dagli orribili effetti della moderna guerra chimica a acquerelli più intimi, che documentano la rovina e il caos della guerra e le vignette della vita quotidiana dei soldati. A volte, Sargent ha trovato una bellezza discreta nella devastazione militare e la sua influenza sul paesaggio.
