Il sitter (1721-1775) commissionò questo pezzo allo stesso tempo che Copley stava dipingendo i ritratti di olio di lunghezza intera di lui e sua moglie, Martha Swett, per la loro casa in Marblehead, Massachusetts (Wadsworth Athenaeum, Hartford). Un'altra versione della miniatura è di proprietà del Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
