George Washington sedette per Trumbull a Philadelphia nel 1792; da quella seduta, l'artista creò una tela a grandezza naturale (Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, Conn.) e questa versione più piccola. Il generale viene mostrato la sera prima della battaglia cardine di Trenton alla fine del 1776. Egli guarda verso l'alto, concepindo la sua strategia contro il nemico in avvicinamento estremamente superiore. Il significato del momento è espresso nel dramma del cielo minaccioso e dal cavallo eccitabile, tenuto in controllo da uno sposo soldato.
