Joseph Marx (1772-1840) immigrato in America da Hannover, Germania, nel 1790 con la madre vedova, Frances (1750-1819). A New York, Marx sposò Richea Myers (1769-1838), figlia del noto argentiere Myer Myers. La famiglia Marx si stabilì a Richmond, in Virginia, e risiedette a 6 e Cary strade. Hanno prodotto dieci bambini sopravvissuti tra il 1795 e il 1812. La famiglia estesa di Marx apparteneva alla Congregazione Beth Shalome ed era prominente nella comunità ebraica di Richmond che è fiorita dal XVIII secolo.
