Alexander, che visse a Parigi durante il 1890, conseguì il successo internazionale con i suoi studi di figure femminili posate con grazia in interni eleganti. In questo esempio, l'espressione facciale provocatoria e le curve morbide riflettono il gusto contemporaneo francese per immagini sensuali delle donne e i ritmi lineari ondulati dell'Art Nouveau. Con il suo modello decorativo in tessuto bianco, "Repose" fu lamponato in una rivista francese come rappresentazione di Loïe Fuller (1862-1928), il ballerino americano famoso per aver manipolato le pieghe di seta scorrevoli nelle sue esibizioni al Folies Bergère di Parigi.
