Nel mito romano, Echo si innamorò del bellissimo Narciso. Ma Narciso, vedendo la propria riflessione in una fontana, si infatuò con essa e di conseguenza disprezzò Echo. Poi si attaccò fino a quando non rimase solo la sua voce. Waterhouse ha meravigliosamente rappresentato l'autoassorbimento di Narciso mentre si schizza a terra guardando verso il basso e totalmente obliquo dell'eco molto desiderabile separato da lui dal fiume. La sua posa angusta dimostra la frustrazione dell'amore non richiesto - un tema molto comune nell'arte vittoriana e un tema preferito per l'artista. Lo sfondo del paesaggio ha un'atmosfera sinistra appropriata al soggetto e una qualità decorativa con forme forti e distinte.
