Ultimo visto nel 1944 e pensato di essere estinto, il picchio avorio-billed è stato recentemente avvistato più volte in un rifugio nazionale di fauna selvatica in Arkansas. Qui raffigurato a grandezza naturale, l'avorio-bill è il più grande del suo genere in Nord America; Audubon si riferiva a esso come "questo grande capo della tribù di picchio", ed è stato anche soprannominato "l'uccello di Dio del Signore", per l'esclamazione che ha suscitato da coloro che l'hanno visto. Audubon fece il suo acquerello dell'avorio-bill (New-York Historical Society) prima del 1826, e commissionò a Kidd di copiarlo e altri suoi soggetti di uccelli in olio per esporre in una mostra itinerante Audubon pianificata ma mai realizzata. Il copyist ha aggiunto lo sfondo del paesaggio.
