Hidley lavorò a Poestenkill, New York, come pittore di casa, un uomo di mano, un artista, e servì come sesstore della Evangelical Lutheran Church. Dipinse una serie di paesaggi urbani di Poestenkill e dei villaggi circostanti, applicando una vista aerea e incorporando edifici chiaramente definiti e riconoscibili nelle sue composizioni. Qui, la chiesa di cui sopra, accanto alla quale Hidley ha vissuto, è la struttura più prominente.
