Questo disegno acquerello risale all'inizio della carriera di Turner. Visitò le Alpi per la prima volta nel 1802 e questo grande acquerello fu completato nel 1804 da uno schizzo fatto sul Ponte del Diavolo. Le dimensioni del dipinto e il fatto che fu esposto alla Royal Academy nel 1815 erano segni che gli acquerelli venivano accettati come opere d'arte complete a loro diritto. Turner ha rimosso la vernice afferrandolo quando bagnato e raschiando via, rivelando la carta bianca per rappresentare i flussi di montagna. Ha firmato il dipinto lungo il contorno della parete rocciosa nell'angolo in alto a sinistra.
