Mazo fu assistente e genero di Velázquez, avendo sposato sua figlia Francisca nel 1633, e mimò molte delle tecniche e dei formati dell'artista più anziano. Qui ritrae María Teresa, figlia del re Filippo IV di Spagna e futura regina di Francia, a circa sette anni. Anche se indossa un vestito rigido della corte, il suo lapdog conferisce al dipinto un'informalità tipica dei ritratti innovativi di Velázquez dei bambini reali. I putti sbiaditomente visibili attraverso la tenda rossa in alto a destra rivelano che Mazo ha riutilizzato una tela una volta dipinta con una composizione completamente diversa, una pratica comune anche nei laboratori di alto livello.
