Anche se le ombre del cast sinistro non erano novità, le silhouette ingegnosamente staccate di Gris si distinguono per le cose stesse, come con la vetroresina, il tubo e la bottiglia in questa scena colorata. A differenza di oggetti corposi, queste apparizioni sono piatte e insitative, eludendo la nostra presa. Nel frattempo, l'ombra debitamente attaccata alla chitarra non obbedisce alle leggi della natura ma cambia forma e direzione, come un gemello canaglia. La disinvoltura di Gris fu ispirata dall’immancabile sottosuolo criminale della serie Fantômas e dalle sue versioni cinematografiche (1913–14), che attraversò l’avanguardia parigina; il personaggio titolare spesso perpettò le sue azioni dastardly come una silhouette furtiva, vestita in nero.
