Un pittore-etcher che era profondamente interessato ad un approccio naturalistico alla pittura e al lavoro grafico, Bastien-Lepage ha spesso raffigurato scene di vita quotidiana nella campagna. Era intimamente familiare con tali scene, come è cresciuto in una fattoria. Oltre alla creazione di ritratti naturalistici, l'artista registrò contadini rurali che faticavano nei campi della tradizione dei realisti Gustave Courbet e Jean-François Millet. Questa incisione è tipica della sua materia preferita soggetto, mostrando un contadino eroico solitario, hand-on-hip con un rastrello di legno che poggia sulla sua spalla dopo un giorno
