Il basso orizzonte e il cielo ampiamente dipinto in questa immagine testimoniano l'interesse di Dupré nell'arte inglese recente, in particolare i paesaggi di John Constable e il tardo Richard Parkes Bonington. Questo lavoro si adatta alla descrizione di una "estesa e vera composizione" recentemente dipinta "sul posto" nella regione di Limousin della Francia centrale, che un critico ammirava alla galleria parigina Susse Frères nell'estate del 1836. Il suo primo proprietario fu Paul Périer (1812–1897), un primo sostenitore di Dupré e dei suoi colleghi Théodore Rousseau e Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps.
