Il dipinto illustra il martirio e il tormento fisico. L'apostolo quasi nudo Bartholomew ci guarda inutilmente, mentre un sadico esecutore ubriaco lo flays. Sul terreno, una scultura classica, che è stata identificata come il dio Baldach, e sullo sfondo due sacerdoti, le loro teste coperte, sono testimoni della tortura.
