Un gioco di dadi dei soldati viene interrotto quando una cameriera accusa l’apostolo Pietro di essere discepolo di Cristo. Paura delle conseguenze, Pietro nega il suo Signore. Lo Spaniard Ribera è stato il protagonista più importante del nuovo naturalismo dopo la morte di Caravaggio nel 1610, e questo è il lavoro che più ha colpito i contemporanei, tra cui Valentin. Qui, il sacro e il profano esistono fianco a fianco. Ribera contrasta le figure assorbite nel loro gioco con un altro che guarda fuori dall'immagine, rendendo lo spettatore complice. Anche l'uomo calvo con un berretto minuscolo modellato per altri artisti.
