Il drago fissa lo spettatore con uno sguardo vigoroso tra le nuvole. Il suo volto è stato delineato in varie tonalità di inchiostro per creare gradazioni di colore con le nuvole dipinte con inchiostro di colore chiaro per rappresentare l'aria e la luce. Come rinomato pittore della scuola di Kano che ha guidato la comunità dell'arte nel XVII secolo, Kano Tanyu è un nipote di Kano Eitoku — un famoso pittore nel periodo Momoyama — e ha lavorato per il Tokugawa Shogunate. Il lavoro porta le parole “verniciate da Hoin Tanyu a 65 anni”, indicando che è stato creato nel 1666.
