Karl Lorenz Rettich è venuto solo ad Ahrenshoop in una fase matura della sua vita. Il suo rapporto con il Mar Baltico era sempre stato uno stretto, perché è nato in una vecchia famiglia Meclemburgo detenuta da un luogo vicino alla costa baltica vicino a Lubecca. Nel 1860 iniziò a studiare legge a Monaco, ma l'anno successivo era già uno studente d'arte sotto Adolf Lier, che aveva anche incoraggiato Carl Malchin e lo sostenne nelle sue prime attività artistiche.
