Cox e Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907) si incontrarono a Parigi nel 1870 e ritratti scambiati nel 1887: una pittura ad olio per un rilievo di bronzo. La tela originale è stata persa nel fuoco dello studio del 1904 di Saint-Gaudens, così Cox ha creato questa replica in tempo per la mostra commemorativa del Metropolitan Museum 1908 del lavoro dello scultore. Saint-Gaudens è mostrato nel suo studio di New York, modellando in argilla un rilievo ritratto dell'artista William Merritt Chase. Una somiglianza di bronzo del figlio dello scultore, Homer, pende sulla parete (il Museo possiede una replica di marmo; 05.15.2). Cox abilmente riecheggia i rilievi del suo amico mostrandolo nel profilo.
