Creato nello stesso anno della sua morte, The Dream è stato l'ultimo dipinto di Rousseau, che è stato debuttato solo pochi mesi prima della sua morte prematura. Al suo debutto, Guillaume Apollinaire, facendo riferimento alle recensioni negative degli anni precedenti, ha esclamato che quest'anno, non ci sarebbe alcuna ridicolina, come il dipinto ha elogiato pura bellezza. Con questo pezzo, Rousseau ha riunito l'esotico e l'ordinario, la giungla e il divano, e combinato i due per formare una giustapposizione di composizione che coinvolge e intrighi. Forse è giusto che questo fosse il suo ultimo dipinto prima della sua morte, come era il suo capolavoro.
