Chaos fu uno dei primi dipinti creati da Petrov-Vodkin al suo arrivo a Parigi nel 1906. Tra i due anni trascorsi a Parigi, Petrov-Vodkin produsse prolifici quantità di lavoro, completando oltre 900 dipinti e disegni. Nell'Accademia Colarossi, studiò vigorosamente la forma umana, schizzando freneticamente nei suoi libri, perfezionando la sua raffigurazione del corpo umano. Mentre a Parigi, Petrov-Vodkin era profondamente influenzato dal pittore Puvis de Chavannes, e imitava la tavolozza stark dell'artista e la composizione semplificata.
