Lan Ying, conosciuto anche con il suo nome di cortesia Tianshu e i nomi letterari Diesou e Shitoutuo, è nato a Qiantang, provincia del Zhejiang. Era un pittore abile. Il suo stile era elegante e liscio durante i suoi primi anni, libero, grande, particolare, e non sofisticato nella sua età media dopo aver viaggiato molto intorno al paese, e vigoroso, robusto ma leggermente vistoso durante i suoi giorni più anziani. Lan era anche buono a figure di pittura, fiori, uccelli, orchidee e bambù. È stato un importante esponente della “Scuola di pittura bianca” (wulinpai).
