Un elaborato altare scolpito fu commissionato dalla confraternita milanese dell'Immacolata Concezione per il loro oratorio a San Francesco nel 1480. Nel 1483 fu stipulato un nuovo contratto con Leonardo e i fratelli de Predis: un pannello centrale doveva essere dipinto da solo Leonardo, e ci furono due pannelli laterali che mostravano angeli che cantavano e suonavano strumenti musicali. Due dipinti di angeli (Un angelo in verde con una Vielle e un angelo in rosso con un Luto) di artisti influenzati da Leonardo, sono indubbiamente quelli per la pala d'altare.
