Come molti dei suoi colleghi artisti del nord, Leonhard Kern viaggiò in Italia come giovane, dove trascorse non meno di cinque anni. Le stazioni del suo tour di studio erano più insolite: così come Roma visitò Napoli, Africa settentrionale e Lubiana. Più tardi si stabilì a Schwäbisch Hall nel sud della Germania, dove gestiva un grande laboratorio. La sua carriera fu oscurata dalla Guerra dei Trent'anni (1618-1648), che gli impedì quasi completamente di ricevere importanti commissioni. Così Kern fu uno dei primi a lavorare per collezionisti e commercianti d'arte. Le sue piccole statue avorio, alabastro e legno godevano di particolare popolarità tra i suoi contemporanei. Più di mezzo metro di altezza e scolpito da diversi pezzi di tiglio, il Budapest Three Graces occupa un posto speciale nello scultore
