In Self-Portrait con Candles, una delle tre opere della collezione Ben Uri, l'artista si mostra in abito modesto e con la testa coperta. Detiene le due candele Shabbat che sono tradizionalmente accese dalla donna della casa circa venti minuti prima del tramonto per segnare l'inizio formale del sabato di venerdì sera. L'opera coniuga il suo interesse per la ritrattistica e gli interni, ed è influenzata dalla sua ammirazione per Rembrandt, in particolare nell'uso della luce e dell'ombra. Mostra anche il suo uso caratteristico di una tavolozza limitata di bianco, blu cobalto e rosa o madder arancione.
