I briganti che abitavano le montagne al di fuori di Roma erano noti sia per le loro vie criminali che per la loro profonda devozione religiosa. Qui, una giovane coppia prega in un santuario di strada — non solo per il successo del marito, ma per la salute della moglie, che è notevolmente incinta. Robert fu uno dei numerosi artisti che lavoravano a Roma, tra cui Achille-Etna Michallon, François-Joseph Navez, e Jean-Victor Schnetz, che popolarizzò tali scene nel 1820. Quando Robert esponeva soggetti come questo al Salone del 1824, un critico notò che aveva offuscato il confine tra storia e pittura di genere, ma lodava il naturalismo delle sue figure.
