Dal momento che Helen Clay Frick ha trascorso la metà di ogni giorno scolastico frequentando lezioni condotte in francese, non c'è da sorprendersi di trovare questi libri affascinanti di canzoni tradizionali francesi illustrate da Boutet de Monvel nella biblioteca di Clayton. Boutet de Monvel è stato un artista accademico che è diventato uno dei più famosi illustratori francesi di libri per bambini. Decorativo ma energico e pieno di giochi, le composizioni piatte del fregio di de Monvel sono in debito con stampe giapponesi e contemporanei inglesi come Walter Crane.
