Popolando la Piazza con i Veneziani energici, Carlevaris dà a questa resa della Piazza San Marco un cast vivace. La piazza è incorniciata dalla Procuratie Vecchie a sinistra, e le Procuratie Nuove a destra. La basilica di San Marco e Torre dell’Orologio sorge in lontananza. Carlevaris è noto per aver studiato attentamente le sue figure prima di posarle su tela, e mentre non esistono tali studi per i lavoratori e gondolieri in questo dipinto, i suoi numerosi schizzi di olio esistenti di signore e signori veneziani in altre collezioni museali attestano questa pratica.
