I ritratti che rappresentano Martin Luther e sua moglie Katharina von Bora furono probabilmente eseguiti dal laboratorio di Cranach. Cranach dipinse principalmente soggetti religiosi, prima nella tradizione cattolica, e poi cercando di trovare nuovi modi di trasmettere le preoccupazioni religiose luterane nell'arte; ma ha anche dipinto ritratti per un tempo.
