Traduzione dell'iscrizione in alto a sinistra: "Io sono la ninfa della fontana sacra. Non interrompere il mio sonno mentre sto riposando." Oltre ai soggetti religiosi e ai ritratti, Cranach dipinse anche scene mitologiche che disegnarono sul nuovo pensiero protestante, con conseguente alcune interpretazioni molto insolite della mitologia classica, come si può vedere nel Ninfe Ritlinante. Cranach ha sviluppato un canone di bellezza femminile che è totalmente in contrasto con l'ideale classico ed è accusato di un potente eroticismo.
