Firmato in basso a sinistra con un serpente alato, il segno dell'artista. Le opere di Lucas Cranach the Elder sono così variegate e piene di incidenti come la sua carriera di artista. Da giovane, visse e lavorò a Vienna dal 1500 al 1503, il periodo in cui entrò in contatto con la Scuola del Danubio, il cui sviluppo era molto influenzato dal suo lavoro. Dopo il 1505 lavorò come pittore di corte a Federico il saggio, Elettore di Sassonia a Wittenberg, e in questa cittadella della Riforma tedesca fondò e diresse un grande e occupato laboratorio. Oltre alle pale d'altare e alle immagini religiose dipinse soggetti mitologici, scene di genere e ritratti, e realizzò un notevole corpo di lavoro grafico. Il muro nero sul lato sinistro di questo dipinto è il risultato di un successivo rivernicio, presumibilmente una tenda era lì originariamente. I capi decorati dei santi (Margaret, Caterina, Dorothy e Barbara) danno un carattere terreno del soggetto religioso.
