Questo ritratto è un'ala di un trittico smantellato in cui dipinti di un uomo e una donna fiancheggiarono un pannello centrale ormai perduto, forse raffigurante la Vergine e il Bambino. Il giovane sitter ben vestito sembra offrire una preghiera silenziosa mentre conta le perline del rosario tenuto nella mano sinistra. L’anello dell’uomo, che porta gli stemmi di due famiglie aristocratiche olandesi, suggerisce di provenire dai Paesi Bassi. Cranach probabilmente dipinse questo ritratto durante la sua visita lì nel 1508.
