Lucas Cranach e il suo laboratorio produssero molti ritratti stampati e dipinti di Martin Luther, con i quali l'artista era ben informato. In questo piccolo pannello, il riformatore è mostrato vicino, in profilo di tre quarti, indossando i distintivi paramenti protestanti neri. L’immagine fu probabilmente unita ad un ritratto di Philipp Melanchthon, teologo, leader intellettuale della Riforma, e principale collaboratore di Lutero. Diverse versioni sopravvissute indicano che l'accoppiamento ha goduto di un'ampia circolazione. Il dipinto presente, che mostra una certa rigidità formulaica, deve essere considerato una ripetizione da parte del laboratorio di Cranach.
