L'eroina ebraica Judith presenta la testa severa del generale assiro che assediò la sua città, avendolo sedotto e poi decapitato con la sua spada. Appropriatamente, è “vestita per uccidere” e indossa un costume contemporaneo elaborato che avrebbe fatto appello ai patroni cortesi di Cranach. Il pittore e il suo laboratorio hanno prodotto diverse versioni di questa composizione di successo, che contrasta la testa raccapricciante di Holofernes con la serena bellezza di Judith. In basso a destra c’è l’insegna di Cranach: un serpente incoronato alato con un anello in bocca.
