Un'abbondanza di dettagli porta energia visiva al ritratto di Margaret Foley del suo amico, la poetessa inglese Mary Howitt (1799–1888). Autodidatta nell'arte della scultura, Foley ricevette grandi lodi per la sensibilità delle sue sculture di rilievo, e mostrò questa placca nella Mostra Centennial di Filadelfia del 1876. La sua complessa lavorazione, in particolare nello scialle in pizzo, dimostra un cambiamento nel gusto scultoreo lontano dalle linee lisce del Neoclassicismo a favore della complessità e del modello. Come altre donne americane di talento, Foley si trasferì in Italia per una maggiore libertà professionale e sociale.
