Da circa 1900 Macdonald ha iniziato a produrre acquerelli più grandi e indipendenti insieme al suo mestiere. Qui, una figura è apparentemente addormentata e può essere sognante, mentre sopra di lei sta una fila di otto teste o maschere che sono forse parte del suo sogno. Il soggetto potrebbe essere stato ispirato dal dramma di Maurice Maeterlinck The Blue Bird, che è stato eseguito a Glasgow nell'autunno 1910. Inoltre, stilisticamente deve molto al lavoro di Aubrey Beardsley e l'artista olandese Jan Toorop, entrambi hanno avuto un enorme impatto sugli artisti di Glasgow all'epoca. Nel 1912 Macdonald espose il lavoro insieme ad altri due acquerelli ad Edimburgo. Sono stati molto ben accolti con un recensore per The Glasgow Herald considerandole “fantasie decoratively esotici nati come erano in un'altra sfera”.
