Maria Oakey Dewing ha dipinto Rose Garden durante una delle sue ultime estati a Cornish, New Hampshire, una colonia di artisti dove lei e la sua famiglia avevano trascorso ogni estate per 15 anni. Lo studio ritagliato e ravvicinato di fiori, colore e texture pone lo spettatore tra le foglie, i fusti e i fiori del suo giardino. Allenato alla Cooper Union School of Design for Women e alla National Academy of Design, Dewing ebbe una carriera di successo. Nel 1880, dopo il suo matrimonio con Thomas Wilmer Dewing, un pittore di figura prominente, perfeziona la sua pittura floreale. Si riferiva ai suoi dipinti di fiori come “moderni”, vedendo l’astrazione nei fiori: "Il fiore offre una bellezza rimossa che esiste solo per la bellezza, più astratta di quanto possa essere nell'essere umano, ancora più squisita.
