All'età di 52 anni Maria Sibylla Merian intraprese un pericoloso viaggio di tre mesi alla colonia olandese del Suriname in Sud America. I suoi disegni e acquerelli della flora e fauna esotica del paese sono stati riprodotti come incisioni al suo ritorno in Olanda due anni dopo. I suoi studi sugli insetti nei loro habitat naturali contribuirono alla comprensione della metamorfosi del XVIII secolo, che era stata fraintesa fin dall’antichità. Mentre in Suriname, Merian ha usato le sue abilità artistiche e osservative per registrare le creature, come questo rettili pure. Ha ritratto i suoi distintivi, intricati modelli di scale con la stessa precisione che ha portato agli insetti. Il loop dinamico ed elegante della sua coda aggiunge interesse compositivo e un fiore barocco. Questa incisione è una di 82 che si basavano su meticolosi schizzi e note sul campo di Merian e appariva nella sua lussuosa pubblicazione illustrata.
