Non molto tempo dopo il suo ritorno negli Stati Uniti dalla Germania, Hartley si avvicinò al Nuovo Messico, dove divenne innamorato delle arti coloniali, messicane e indigene della regione. La Vergine di Guadalupe raffigura un bulto, una piccola statua religiosa scolpita e dipinta. Hartley probabilmente basava il dipinto su un esempio specifico della Vergine Maria a cui aveva accesso. Artisti e collezionisti sono stati attratti da bultos perché credevano di essere fatti dai loro (solitamente anonimi) creatori con sia direttività e sincerità, qualità a cui Hartley simile aspirava.
