Il paesaggio scuro e pieno di nuvole di Hartley rende omaggio diretto al pittore Albert Pinkham Ryder. Dopo aver visto il lavoro di Ryder a New York nel 1909, Hartley, un nativo del Maine, eseguì una serie di paesaggi bleak, emotivamente sconvolti, persino torturati del suo stato di casa. Questo dipinto raffigura la regione di Stoneham Valley, vicino North Lovell, Maine, anche se Hartley dipinto a New York dalla memoria.
