Hartley trascorse un'estate produttiva nel 1916 in compagnia di Charles Demuth e Eugene O"Neill a Provincetown, Massachusetts. Il resort Cape Cod è stato un luogo preferito per artisti, scrittori e attori. All'interno di questo piccolo formato, diverse case, barche a vela, e l'alto Monumento di Pellegrini sono compressi in forme piane e geometriche.
