Nato in Germania, Martin Carlin si trasferisce a Parigi per diventare un ebéniste, un produttore di mobili che lavora con intarsi e impiallacciatura di legno. Divenne noto per eleganti tavoli, stand musicali e armadi decorati con porcellana Sèvres, a volte con parti meccaniche. Questo tavolo, grande per un pezzo di Carlin, è decorato con ventiotto placche Sèvres, dipinte con mazzi di fiori. Con le gambe esagonali affusolate, i supporti in bronzo dorato e le impiallacciature in legno esotico, il tavolo dimostra la simmetria e l'elegante semplicità del periodo Luigi XVI.
