Il conte Giacomo Durazzo, diplomatico genovese, arrivò a Vienna nel 1749. Ernestine Aloisia Ungnad von Weissenwolff lo sposò nell'anno successivo. Come direttore dei teatri imperiali dal 1754 al 1764, Durazzo promosse la riforma di Gluck dell'opera italiana. Questo ritratto risale probabilmente agli inizi del 1760, poco prima della partenza di Durazzo per Venezia. Martin van Meytens nacque a Stoccolma, dove suo padre era emigrato dall'Olanda. Nel 1717 si trasferì a Parigi e vi lavorò come ritrattista. Viaggiò ampiamente in Germania, Italia e Austria, prima di accettare nel 1731 la posizione di pittore ufficiale alla corte imperiale di Vienna.
