Tra gli anni del 1819 e del 1823, Goya dipinse una serie di dipinti sulle pareti della sua villa a Quinto del Sordo, che ritrasse immagini terribili, fantastiche o morbide. Questi dipinti sono ora chiamati i dipinti neri, riferendosi allo stato mentale di Goya durante questo periodo oscuro nella sua vita, a causa del suo bout con malattia, che lo ha fatto sordo, così come la lotta interna in Spagna. Questo dipinto è stato completato delle pareti della sua sala da pranzo, ed è una versione di Saturno, il carattere mitologico romano, che, temendo che i suoi figli un giorno lo abbattessero, mangiavano ciascuno di loro sulle loro nascite.
